The Goodman Accounting Challenge - Details

Teams:

Each university can register a maximum of three teams. Each team must consist of up to four undergraduate accounting students, and a moderator or administrator as a chaperone. Each university has the option to nominate an alternate. Only full-time students enrolled in the institution's bachelor's degree programs are eligible. Students who were full-time the previous semester, but are not required to carry a full-time schedule to obtain their degree, are eligible. Goodman & Company interns, (even those who are on leave of absence from the firm) and Goodman & Company employees & their immediate families are not eligible to participate.

Pre-qualifying Challenge:

A link to the pre-qualifying exam and instructions will be sent to the student's email address. The preliminary exam is not required to be moderated by a university official, unless the university is inclined to do so. All students and moderators are asked to abide by the honor code system. The preliminary exam will be held between October 10-17, 2009.

Each team has 6 hours to complete the exam, which may be completed at any time during those days. To complete the test, each team must sign in on the website (the link and password provided in an email received by each student) and complete the test 6 hours from sign-in, students will not be allowed to go back after a later date or time, and will not be able to sign in more than once. All exams must be completed by 5pm on October 17, 2009. Computer support may be limited depending on when the test is being taken. Computer support is offered during regular business hours and from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, October 17, 2009. After submitting the exam online, the students will be prompted to email an additional copy to gac@goodmanco.com for verification.

Tools You Will Need on the day of the Pre-qualifying Test:

The students will be instructed to open the exam file from their e-mail and save it to their hard drive. Each team will be assigned a unique-identifying name that has been added to the Word document. The file name should not be changed while saving the files to your hard drive or sending the results. Any teams that do not follow all instructions may have points deducted from their final score.

The Final Challenge:

The five highest scoring teams will be selected from the results of the pre-qualifying challenge. The selected teams and their university professor/administrator will be invited to attend the last round in the competition which will be held at Goodman & Company's Richmond office, November 6-8, 2009. Some reference materials will be provided during the final challenge; students may bring any laptops and accounting materials that they want– accounting textbooks, FASB/industry guides, for example. Weekend events consist of a Friday evening dinner and planned entertainment. The final competition will begin at 9:00 am Saturday and end at 3:00 pm. A banquet dinner will follow, with prizes being awarded at the end of the evening.

Travel Information:

Expenses related to mileage will be reimbursed for the final competition. Lodging, meals and sponsored social events will be provided by Goodman & Company.

Awards:

Monetary prizes will be awarded to each of the final five competing schools and team members.

As a participant in the Goodman & Company Accounting Challenge:
-I / We (as part of the student team listed on the Team Registration Form) will neither give nor receive assistance in formulating answers to the Goodman Accounting Challenge case study questions.
-I / We (as part of the student team listed on the Team Registration Form) will report any violation of this honor code to Hugh Barlow, Partner In Charge of the Goodman & Company Accounting Challenge.
-I / We (as part of the student team listed on the Team Registration Form) agree to abide by this honor code and understand that a violation of this honor code will result in disqualification for my whole team.

I will abide by this agreement and will refrain from committing any violation of the honor code.

Violations of the Honor Code:
-A violation includes the use of unauthorized aids; copying from another student's work; soliciting, giving, and/or receiving unauthorized aid orally.
-Failure to report a known or suspected violation of the Code in the manner prescribed.
